Be The Real ____.

Fighter
Fighter. Negative or positive word? That’s up to you to decide. I’ve had the humbling experience of being a part of a fight club twice a week for the past year. How did I end up here? Well, one night I went to film Jabari, the man with dreads, and I found myself signing up for class instead.

As a young girl, I was taught to associate fighting with bad behavior. Anytime I stood up for myself I was met with discipline. It’s a strange message to send a child. At my first fight club I realized something: I was scared of confrontation. I was scared of getting hit, but even more, I was scared of hitting someone. I’d back up if I was getting hit and I’d back up when I got the upper hand. Fighting was built up in my head as a negative thing.

I never thought about the calmness and awareness that’s required to actually engage in a fight. It’s quite a skill. I began to understand how to use the physicality of fighting to face my daily life hangups and fears and to ultimately conquer them. It’s like therapy. You are going to get hit, confrontation is going to happen, so what are you going to do about it? All you can do is push through the fear and get to the other side. Learning this through Muay Thai was an extremely valuable lesson.
