Be The Real ____.

Skyler
I met seven-year-old Skyler in Hollywood, FL at a gymnastics tournament. At the time I was making a film on the ultra-competitive sport — which I can personally attest to, being that I was a competitive gymnast as a kid. There is a ton of pressure and there is no room to fail. I know for sure it made me a very serious kid and probably contributes to my determination as an adult.

When I arrived at the gymnastics tournament and saw all the children competing, I saw the same seriousness I saw in myself. But then there was Skyler. Utterly free and magnetic. Somehow she had maintained her youthfulness and her silliness in this sport. I had to dig deeper, and that’s when I met Shareeke, Skyler’s mom. Skyler’s freedom and attitude made perfect sense. The video speaks for itself, but Shareeke is no ordinary lady. She’s an extraordinary mom. Her words of wisdom and the space that she creates for Skyler to be herself are simply amazing. She embodies the mother we all need when trying to overcome our fears.
